In solidarity with a national day of protest, organized with "Join the Impact!", Spectrum, at UCCS and the Pride Center in Colorado Springs organized a protest against the passage of Prop 8 in California, in which 95-100 people attended. In Colorado rallies took place in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Durango and Aspen. The "Join The Impact!" movement seeks to encourage the LGBTQ community not to look towards the past and place blame, but instead to look forward toward what needs to be done now to achieve one goal: Full equality for ALL. We stand for reaching out across all communities. We do not stand for bigotry, for scapegoating, or using anger as our driving force. Our mission is to encourage our community to engage our opposition in a conversation about full equality and to do this with respect, dignity, and an attitude of outreach and education. Join The Impact!, as an entity, will not encourage divisiveness, violence, or disrespect of others and we do not approve of this. We do not stand for pointing the finger at one group and placing blame. The LGBTQ community comes in all different colors, creeds, religious beliefs, and political parties. If we allow ourselves to place blame on one community or another, then we are no better than those who oppose us. We will not pit one community against another. At Join The Impact!, we are all inclusive. As such, we will continue to encourage debate from all sides of the conversation provided it is civil and respectful. We will encourage our community to not let anger steer the conversation, but with an understanding that anger is a human reaction and we hope that it can be used as a catalyst toward positive change. Finally, we stand for national unity in the face of opposing forces that have steered the conversation into a state by state issue. We will celebrate our state by state wins, but work as one large entity to help gain these wins and will unite in the conversation against us to plant the seed of change and community. SPECTRUM is a student run organization at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Our mission is to provide a means of social interaction, support, community involvement and visibility for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and their supporters. We do this by organizing and participating in campus-wide activates such as National Coming Out Day, organizing round-table discussions and having a good time. In addition we provide educational materials to help fight homophobia. SPECTRUM tries to work closely with the LGBTQ community and other LGBTQ college organizations in the Colorado Springs area to help us in our mission. The Pride Center in Colorado Springs envisions a thriving Colorado Springs in which all people, including GLBT people, can reach their full potential as human beings, free from oppression and discrimination. We envision a region where individual rights are honored, and constitutional rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are upheld for all people. http://JoinTheImpact.wetpaint.com/ http://www.YourPrideCenter.org/ http://web.uccs.edu/Spectrum/index.html Keith Olbermann's great statement on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HpTBF6EfxY part 2 of Springs rally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osRSCXwx2X0
